Lewandowski leads chase for European Golden Shoe at Christmas
LONDON: Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich led the Christmas ranking in the European Golden Shoe administered by the European Sports Media grouping.
The Golden Shoe is based on a ranking computed according to UEFA’s July rankings. Thus marksmen from among the top five nations benefit from a multiple of 2.0, the next batch (places six to 22) a factor of 1.5 and the remainder 1.0.
As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
Last season’s winner was Lionel Messi who collected the prize as the continent’s leading league marksman for a record-extending sixth time.
Messi finished Barcelona’s Spanish league title-winning campaign with 36 goals, three clear of Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe (33) and a massive 10 clear of Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella (26).
