BANGKOK: Australia became the final Asian team to book their place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after defeating Uzbekistan 1-0, courtesy of Nicholas D’Agostino’s effort two minutes into the second half, to finish third in the AFC U23 Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Olyroos join Japan who qualify as hosts as well as South Korea and Saudi Arabia who sealed their Olympic berths after reaching the under-23 final.

Asian Football Confederation president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “Asian teams have a proud record at the Olympic Games and together with hosts Japan, I am confident that our four representatives will relish the experience at the grand spectacle and do their best to make Asia proud.”

Japan and South Korea finished third and fourth in the men’s competition in the London Olympic Games while Japan also clinched the silver medal in the women’s tournament in 2012, topping their fourth-place finish in the preceding Games in Beijing.

The men’s Olympic tournament 2020 starts on July 23, with the final on August 8. The women’s tournament starts on July 22 with the final on August 7.

The final qualification round of the Asian qualifiers for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament will be played from February 3 to 9, 2020 in Sydney after being switched from Nanjing, China, because of the coronavirus crisis.

The top two teams from each group will face-off in the play-off stage where Asia’s top two teams will qualify for the final tournament.
