MADRID: Iker Casillas, Spain’s former world and European champion goalkeeper-captain, has indicated a challenge to Luis Rubiales in the forthcoming national federation presidency election.

Casillas, now winding down his playing career at FC Porto, has reportedly submitted a formal candidacy intention to the national sports council. The latter has endured a difficult relationship with the RFEF going back to the regime of former FIFA and UEFA powerbroker Angel Maria Villar.

The 38-year-old has discussed his intention with past and present national team colleagues.

He will face a difficult task if he pursues his candidacy as Rubiales has been working hard behind the scenes to secure his status both within the Spanish and international federations.

Casillas played 725 times for Real Madrid, winning two Club World Cups, three Champions League and 13 other international and national trophies. He played a record 167 times for Spain, winning the World Cup in 2010 and European titles in 2008 and 2012.
