ASUNCION: The opening schedules of 2022 World Cup qualifiers in South Anerica have been set for September by the continental governing body CONMEBOL.

The 10-team mini-league, from which four nations qualify directly for the World Cup finals in Qatar, should have started in March.

A statement from the continental governing body said a resumed video conference meeting of the executive committee had approved all necessary travel and health precaution protocols for both home and European-based stars such as Lionel Messi and Co.

No decision has yet been reached on a resumption for the two main club competitions, the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

Ecuador’s María Sol Muñoz has been re-elected as CONMEBOL’s female representative on FIFA Council with Ignacio Alonso, the president of the Uruguayan federation, confirmed in the role he took over on an interim basis last year.
