SAN SEBASTIAN: Lyon, the queens of European women’s club football, won the Champions League for a fifth consecutive season and seventh time in all by defeating Wolfsburg 3-1 in San Sebastian.

France’s Eugenie le Sommer and Japan’s Saki Kumagai put Lyon in command at half-time. Alexandra Popp headed in for Wolfsburg after the break but Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir’s late third against her old club sealed it.

Oddly, the Iceland international was eligible to receive medals as both a winner and runner-up, having signed for Lyon from Wolfsburg this summer while UEFA allowed players to register for a second team this season for the competition, as a one-off rule because of the virus.

The first time these sides met was the 2013 final: Lyon’s first defeat inside 90 minutes for 120 games. In turn, Lyon are the only team to defeat Wolfsburg in the competition in four seasons.

Wolfsburg, winners in 2013 and 2014 and previously runners-up in 2016 and 2018, had been unbeaten in more than a year.

The German champions won the 2013 final 1-0 but have not beaten Lyon since. It has been close but Lyon have always prevailed: on penalties in the 2016 final, 2-1 on aggregate in the 2017 quarter-final, and after extra time in the 2018 final. Last year Lyon won both legs of the quarter-final.
