LONDON: Tottenham scored early through Heung-min Son and in the second half through Giovani Lo Celso as they stifled Manchester City to win 2-0 and go top of the Premier League.

Victory for Spurs marked appropriately the first anniversary of Jose Mourinho’s managerial takeover against a City side who rarely looking a threat throughout the 90 minutes.

Son’s fifth-minute opener set the hosts on course for victory and though City will feel aggrieved to have had Aymeric Laporte’s goal ruled out just before half-time, they were second best for much of the game.

Lo Celso’s goal on the break, just 37 seconds after coming off the bench, midway through the second half made the game safe.

It was another Jose Mourinho masterclass, as he watched Tottenham produce one of his trademark performances.

Pep Guardiola’s men, on the other hand, dominated possession but were toothless.

The City boss signed a contract extension this week, but was not able to toast it with three points after his team failed to breakdown the disciplined and organised hosts.

It meant Mourinho, who celebrated a year in charge of Tottenham on Friday, again got one over his old rival to send the north Londoners back to the top of the table for at least 24 hours.

Mourinho had predicted Raheem Sterling would start for City despite being unavailable for England due to a calf injury, but he was only named on the bench where he was joined by the fit again Sergio Aguero.

Chelsea win away
.

Chelsea made light work of Newcastle to win 2-0 at St James’ Park and briefly go top of the Premier League for the first time this season.

They led early when Federico Fernandez turned Mason Mount’s cross into his own net, under pressure from Ben Chilwell at the back post.

The visitors then missed a host of chances to make the game safe, but eventually did so just after the hour when a brilliant run from Timo Werner was finished off by Tammy Abraham.

The result delivered Frank Lampard’s side, much-maligned for their terrible defensive record last term, an eighth clean sheets in nine in all competitions.

United homecoming
.

Bruno Fernandes was involved in penalty drama at both ends against West Brom as the midfielder secured Manchester United’s first home league win of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men avoided becoming just the third side in the club’s history to start a campaign with five winless home league matches on Saturday evening.

West Brom – without a victory since promotion back to the Premier League – made life difficult for United, who eked out a 1-0 win thanks to Fernandes’ penalty after the video assistant referee’s intervention during a frantic start to the second half.

Man-of-the-match Sam Johnstone produced fine saves to thwart Anthony Martial and his former club in a goalless opening period at Old Trafford, where Slaven Bilic’s men looked set to open the scoring straight after half-time.

Referee David Coote pointed to the spot after adjudging Fernandes to have taken down Conor Gallagher in the box but overturned his decision after reviewing the incident on the advice of VAR.
