KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: UEFA is expected to reach a decision on March 5 over the admission of fans to matches at the Euro 2020 finals in June and July.

A decision needs to be delayed until as late as possible because of uncertainty over the spread of the pandemic and the different response of the 12 different host nations for the finals.

The fact is that the pan-European structure decided under the regime of since-disgraced president Michel Platini has placed the European federation in an invidiously undesirable dilemma.

Everythng will depend on the response from the various national and local governments and health authorities in the 12 host nations.

Various options appear open.

A first would be based on a premise that the pandemic is being brought under control and the stadia can be filled entirely. Even at this stage that appears unlikely.

A second option envisions an occupancy of between 50 and 100pc, a third would feature one-third of the stadium capacity available and the final scenario provides for all matches behind closed doors.

Informal discussions have also taken into account the possibility of switching the finals to one host nation but this is highly unlikely considering all the contractual obligations already undertaken.
