KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Robert Lewandowski is poised to take the lead shortly in the ESM European Golden Shoe rankings.

The Bayern Munich centre-forward scored twice – once from a penalty – in the European and German champions’ 5-2 weekend defeat of Mainz. These goals took his tally to 19 and means he is two points behind Golden Shoe leader Kasper Junker of Norway’s Bodo/Glimt.

Scandinavian leagues which traditionally play to a calendar-year schedule always provide the initial leaders before being overtaken in due course by the superstars of western Europe.

Junker, a 26-year-old former Danish under-21 international, joined Bodo/Glimt at the start of last year from AC Horsens.

The Golden Shoe is based on a ranking computed according to UEFA’s end-of-season rankings. Thus marksmen from among the top five nations benefit from a multiple of 2.0, the next batch (places six to 22 ) a factor of 1.5 and the remainder 1.0.
