KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Robert Lewandowski has edged ever closer to seizing command of the ESM European Golden Shoe rankings.

The Bayern Munich centre-forward scored once in the European and German champions’ 3-2 weekend defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach after they had taken a two-goal lead.

The goals took the league tally of FIFA’s Best Player of 2020 to 20 and means he is a mere half a point behind the Golden Shoe leader Kasper Junker of Norway’s Bodo/Glimt.

Scandinavian leagues which traditionally play to a calendar-year schedule always provide the initial leaders before being overtaken in due course by the superstars of western Europe.

Junker, a 26-year-old former Danish under-21 international, joined Bodo/Glimt at the start of last year from AC Horsens.

The Golden Shoe is based on a ranking computed according to UEFA’s end-of-season rankings. Thus marksmen from among the top five nations benefit from a multiple of 2.0, the next batch (places six to 22 ) a factor of 1.5 and the remainder 1.0.

Last season’s winner was Lazio’s Ciro Immobile.
