KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Reynaldo Vásquez, former president of the El Salvadoran football federation FESFUT, has lost his fight against extradition to the United States.

A high court ruling has set a deadline of 12 days for confirmation of the essential security and health protocols of his transfer which is connection with corruption charges under the FIFAGate investigation, dating back to 2015.

A request for extradition was submitted on behalf of the US Department of Justice in August 2017 but a decision had to await his release from prison in El Salvador where he was serving a tax evasion jail term.

Vasquez had been jailed for eight years, reduced for good behavior to five years. On completion of the sentence last June 7 he remained in detention pending the outcome of the extradition process.

In October 2019 he was banned from football for life by the FIFA ethics committee and fined 500,000 Swiss francs for corruption and bribery between 2009 and 2011.

Vazquez has been charged by the US DoJ of accepting bribes from a marketing company, Media World, in exchange for television rights of the El Salvadoran national team in qualifying games ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

More than 40 individuals and several companies were originally indicted in the FIFAGate process.

Jack Warner, the banned former FIFA vice-president and head of the central/north American CONCACAF confederation, is still contesting an extradition application in Trinidad & Tobago.
