KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: European Championship finals Poland have sacked their coach, five months ahead of the rescheduled start of UEFA Euro 2020.

The Polish Football Federation announced the dismissal of Jerzy Brzeczek, 49, in a short statement which also thanked him for his work since 2018.

Federation president Zbigniew Boniek said: “This is a sad day for me but I have thought hard and acted for the benefit of the team.”

Boniek had extended Brzeczek’s contract only last November.

Brzeczek took over from Adam Nawalka after poor results at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia when where Poland were eliminated in the group stage.

The 49-year-old appeared 42 times for Poland and also played in Israel and Austria before launching his coaching career with Rakow Czestochowa. Later he coached Lechia Gdansk, GKS Katowice and Wisla Plock.

Poland have been drawn in Group E of UEFA Euro 2020 along with Spain, Sweden and Slovakia. The scheduled venues are Dublin and Bilbao.
