KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Robert Lewandowski has continued to extend his lead in the latest rankings of the ESM Golden Shoe for Europe’s leading league marksman.
Remarkably for this stage of the season, the Bayern Munich’s centre-forward is eight goals clear of his nearest challengers in the all-important autumn-spring leagues calendar.
Lewandowski scored the German champions’ third goal in their 4-1 weekend win over Hoffenheim to take his total thus far to 23 thus become as the first Bundesliga player to score in 11 successive matches.
The goal extended the lead held by FIFA’s Best Player of 2020 from Kasper Junker of Norway’s Bodo/Glimt on points though Junker has scored more goals (27).
This is because the Golden Shoe is based on a ranking computed according to UEFA’s end-of-season rankings. Thus marksmen from among the top five nations benefit from a multiple of 2.0, the next batch (places six to 22 ) a factor of 1.5 and the remainder 1.0.
Scandinavian leagues which traditionally play to a calendar-year schedule always provide the initial leaders before being overtaken in due course by the superstars of western Europe.
Last season’s winner was Lazio’s Ciro Immobile.
