KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Only Robert Lewandowski, it appears, can restrain his own goal-scoring talents.

The Pole achieved a two-goal match-winning performance for Bayern Munich’s in the Club World Cup semi-finals against Al Ahly three days after keeping the German champions atop the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win away to Hertha Berlin.

However Lewandowski missed a penalty in that game which ended his Bundesliga record sequence of having scored at least one goal in 11 successive matches.

His tally of  24 goals means FIFA’s Best Player of 2020 still leads the ESM European Golden Shoe rankings from Kasper Junker of Norway’s Bodo/Glimt on points though Junker has scored more goals (27).

This is because the Golden Shoe is based on a ranking computed according to UEFA’s end-of-season rankings. Thus marksmen from among the top five nations benefit from a multiple of 2.0, the next batch (places six to 22 ) a factor of 1.5 and the remainder 1.0.

Scandinavian leagues which traditionally play to a calendar-year schedule always provide the initial leaders before being overtaken in due course by the superstars of western Europe.

Last season’s winner was Lazio’s Ciro Immobile.
