FRANKFURT: Germany coach Joachim Low has indicated he is considering recalling his discarded veterans for the European Championship finals in June and July.
Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller and Jerome Boateng are in fine form for their club and Low is under increasing pressure after a number of poor results and performances including a 6-0 defeat by Spain last November.
Low, in an interview with ARD, said: “When you start to rebuild it should not be interrupted but the reality is that the pandemic has deprived us of almost a year of preparation and so we can really ask now whether we should not interrupt this strategy.”
These words sound like the beginning of an about-face for Löw, under pressure from the media in his country to reinstate Müller and Boateng as well as Borussia Dortmund’s centre-back Mats Hummels. The trio were unceremoniously ousted by Löw in March 2019.
Löw has said he wants to make a decision in May and not consider recalling the trio next month for the start of qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
