BUENOS AIRES: The President of Argentina has admitted to fears about the country’s cohosting – with Colombia – of the Copa America in June and July.

The finals are due to kick off on June 13 in Buenos Aires with the final on July 10.

However President Alberto Fernandez cautioned: “I don’t want to spoil the Copa America spectacle but I think we have to be very careful. We still have time to see how things are going and how we can tackle this challenge.”

Fernandez also expressed concerns about the involvement of Argentinian clubs in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

He said: “All this worries me because I see objectively what is happening with the Argentinian teams. The cases of infection are repeated and they have not yet played outside Argentina and that is nothing more than living in a society where the cases are increasing.

“What is happening with the Argentinian teams is proof of what could happen if in addition we leave the country to play in countries where the problem is even more serious. Already without leaving, the teams have high levels of infection and, after leaving Argentina, it could be worse.”
