MUNICH: Hansi Flick wants to cut short his contract with German champions Bayern Munich at the season’s end.

Flick announced his decision after the Bundesliga leaders’ 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg.

He said he had told the board after the European title-holders’ midweek Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain – and to the team after the Wolfsburg game.

He said: “I would like to get out of my contract at the end of the season. That is a fact.”

Flick did not give his reasons though he is known to have had his differences with technical director Hasan Salihamidzic but also to be favourite to succeed Joachim Low as national coach after the Euro finals in the summer.

He added: “The future is not at all clear. There has been no discussion about that. Of course, the DFB is an option that every coach has to consider. But I have to digest everything first, the last few weeks have not been easy for me either.

“That’s why the process of telling the club and of course my team was extremely important today. ”

It is still not clear whether Bayern will comply with Flick’s request to terminate his contract which runs to 2023.

The 56-year-old said: “I only expressed my wish. I do know that I have a contract. After Paris it was a good time to tell the club.”

Flick stepped up from assistant to Niko Kovac on November 3, 2019 – initially on an interim basis – and a few months later led Bayern to six titles.

While they have already been eliminated in the DFB Cup and Champions League this season, defending their title in the Bundesliga is now within reach with a seven-point lead over RB Leipzig.

** Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 4-0 to win the Spanish Cup with two goals from Lionel Messi.
