ZURICH/TOKYO: The 2016 men’s Olympic Games football final will be repeated in the first stage of the tournament in Tokyo.

Holders Brazil were drawn in the same opening round group as Germany whom they beat in a penalty shootout in Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

The draw for both men’s and women’s tournaments was staged at the Home of FIFA in Zurich.

Host Japan were drawn into Groups A and E: the women begin their campaign against Canada at the Sapporo Dome on 21 July, while the men will face South Arica at the Tokyo Stadium the following day.

The women’s finalists will battle it out for the gold medal on August 6 at Tokyo’s new Olympic Stadium which will also be the setting for the Games’ opening and closing ceremonies. Sapporo, Miyagi, Kashima, Saitama and Yokohama (men’s final) will be the other match venues.

The draws were conducted by Jaime Yarza, FIFA director of tournaments, and Sarai Bareman, FIFA chief women’s football officer. They were assisted by Lindsay Tarpley, member of the US women’s national team and two-time Olympic gold medallist (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), and Ryan Nelsen, captain of the New Zealand Olympic squad in 2008 and London 2012.

Both the men’s and women’s Olympic Football Tournaments will be played in a group stage, followed by quarter finals, semi-finals and bronze medal and gold medal matches.
