FRANKFURT: Robert Lewandowski equalled Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record for 40 goals in a single season after he scored in a 2-2 draw against Freiburg.

The Bayern Munich striker scored from the penalty spot in the first-half to reach 47 across all competitions. He has now scored in each of his last nine league appearances.

Injury has forced Lewandowski to miss part of the season but he now has one game left to break the record.

Muller’s  40 goals in the 1971-72 season is the highest return in the top-flight of German football, with Muller also holding second (38 in 1969-70) and third (36 in 1972-73) places.

Bayern have one game remaining of the campaign – against Augsburg.
