KEIR RADNEDGE REPORTS: Hansi Flick, having guided Bayern Munich to a second successive Bundesliga crown, has formally agreed to try to work his magic with the German national team.

However the former Mannschaft assistant will not succeed long-serving Joachin Low until after the European Championship finals in June and July. He is then contracted to take charge up to and including Germany’s hosting of Euro 2024.

The appointment had been awaited ever since Flick, 56, announced that he would not continue at Bayern. Löw had already announced in March that he would step down after 15 years during which he guided Germany to success in the 2014 World Cup.

Flick, a member of Low’s coaching staff between 2006 and 2014, said: “I am impatient to start work when I see the class of the players, especially the young ones. We have reasons to approach the next tournaments, especially the European Championship at home in 2024, with optimism.”

Oliver Bierhoff, the DFB’s national teams coordinator, said: “I know and appreciate Hansi’s human and professional qualities from the many successful years we spent together in the national team. It was important for me to have clear ideas before the start of the Euro. We have a common goal: to get back to the top of the tournament world.”

Flick took over Bayern initially as caretaker in late 2019 and led them to seven titles, including two Bundesligas and the 2020 Champions League. However he then fell out with  sports director Hasan Salihamidzic over transfer policy and asked to cut short a contract which was not due to expire until 2023.

Bayern have already named Julian Nagelsmann from Leipzig as Flick’s successor.
