LONDON: Manchester United failed, frustratingly, to follow up their opening thrashing of Leeds when they were held 1-1 at Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton.

A second-half Mason Greenwood  goal cancelled out an early Fred own goal. Jadon Sancho made no impression as a second-half substitute as United extended unbeaten away league record to 27 games.

Greenwood said: “There’s a little bit of disappointment. I think we should have got all three points with a late goal. Southampton defended well but I think we should have gone for it after the equaliser. Unfortunately we didn’t.

Harry Kane made his first appearance of the season for Tottenham in their 1-0 win at Wolves.

England’s captain appeared as a late second-half substitute in a victory delivered by an early penalty from Dele Alli. Kane was denied a goal by a fine save from keeper Jose Sa. Time is running out for Kane is he is achieve his dream move to champions Manchester City.

Alli’s first goal in 17 months provided the win for manager Nuno Espirito Santo against his old club.
