LAUSANNE: Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, has side-stepped offering a public opinion on the possibility of a World Cup every two years.

World football federation FIFA is undertaking a feasibility study with president Gianni Infantino understood to be in favour of a move which see a World Cup staged in the same year as the summer Olympics.

The interlocking four-year stagings is a bedrock of the international sports calendar.

Bach told a media briefing he did not want to “put fuel on the fire” of the debate but added: “The consequences or potential consequences are becoming clearer day by day thanks to the discussion within FIFA and in particular through the contributions of continental associations

“We are closely monitoring these discussions, and find them very interesting.”

Infantino is a member of the International Olympic Committee.
