PARIS: The French league has voted to oppose a FIFA plan to stage the World Cup every two years instead of every four because it would harm domestic football.
A statement from the LFP, in response to the proposal supported by world federation president Gianni Infantino, said: “The development of football does not happen only through the World Cup, it rests above all on domestic championships.”
Doubling up on the World Cup would inflict “an irremediably negative impact” on national football.
Clubs were angered that the proposal was being promoted by FIFA “without consultation.”
A major rearrangement of international calendar “would significantly disturb the continuity of the domestic championships and would cause the lack of interest of the fans.”
