ROME: A last-minute penalty miss by Chelsea midfielder Jorginho left European champions Italy frustrated with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in World Cup European qualifying Group C.

This means Monday will see a straight shoot-out between the pair for top spot with Italy away to Northern Ireland and Switzerland at home to Bulgaria.

The Azzurri hold the edge going in to the last round of games with a goal difference two better than the Swiss.

The prospect of a play-off spot will evoke unpleasant memories for Italy, who missed out on the World Cup in 2018 when they were beaten over two legs by Sweden.

Switzerland also ended up in the play-offs four years ago, but beat Northern Ireland to make it to the finals in Russia.

Silvan Widmer opened the scoring for Switzerland with Giovanni Di Lorenzo equalising before Jorginho blazed over the bar after VAR ruled that Ulisses Garcia had pushed down Domenico Berardi.
