ASUNCION: South American confederation CONMEBOL has suspended the referee and VAR official for the goalless World Cup qualifying draw between Argentina and Brazil.

Referee Andres Ismael Cunha Soca Vargas and VAR Esteban Daniel Ostojich Vega were disciplined for “serious mistakes” during the match.

Brazil coach Tite was furious after the game at the failure of the officials to see Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi elbow Raphinha in the face.

Otamendi’s action had been “violent conduct” according to CONMEBOL.

A statement added: “The performance of the main referee Andres Ismael Cunha Soca Vargas and of the VAR Esteban Daniel Ostojich Vega have been analyzed technically [leading to a] conclusion that they have committed serious and obvious errors ”.
