VIENNA: Franco Foda is to quit as manager of Austria after their 2-1 defeat last week by Wales in the World Cup European playoffs.

The 55-year-old German will be on the Austrian bench for the last time in Tuesday’s friendly against Scotland in Vienna.

He said: “I have reflected a lot in recent days. We have not qualified for the World Cup and I take full responsibility. That is why my job as head of the team will end after the game against Scotland.”

Austria lost 2-1 to Wales last week in the first round of the World Cup European playoff semi-finals in Cardiff.

Foda had taken over in 2017 and the peak of his reign was guiding Austria to the round of 16 at last year’s rescheduled finals of Euro 2020. His record 47 games features 27 wins, five draws and 15 defeats.
