AMSTERDAM: Netherlands World Cup coach Louis van Gaal has confirmed he is suffering from an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
Van Gaal, 70, announced it on Sunday night in a television programme. He said: in his country. “I thought I was healthy but I’m not.”
He added: “In every concentration as coach of the national team I have had to go out at night to go to the hospital without the players knowing until now. You do not tell the people you work with because it could influence their decisions.
“I received chemotherapy 25 times. I had preferential treatment at the hospital. They let me in through the back door when I was going and they have treated me wonderfully.”
Van Gaal is still expecting to lead Netherlands in the World Cup finals in Qatar.
On April 11, a documentary about Van Gaal ‘s life will be released and the way he deals with his illness is part of it.
