LONDON: Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg wsa unhappy with the failures of VAR during the 2-1 extra-time defeat by England at Wembley in the UEFA Women’s European Championship final.

In the 26th minute the ball ricocheted off the arm of England captain Leah Williamson’s above shoulder height but referee Kateryna Monzul waved play on. VAR Paolo Valeri checked the incident but the game then continued without a penslty award or possible red card for Williamson.

Voss-Tecklenburg said: “It was a handball, you have to see that.” She was not made aware of the VAR check until after the game and added: “You can’t understand it at all. Of course it’s stupid, the people who are responsible have to think about it.”

However Voss-Tecklenburg refused to put defeat down to this one incident.

She said: “England deserved the win after such a strong tournament. We can be proud of what we’ve achieved, even if it wasn’t quite enough.”
