MADRID: The 1960s’ star forward Amancio Amaro has been nominated as new honorary president of European champions Real Madrid.
The annual members assembly will confirm Amancio, 82, in the role on October 2.
He succeeds former team-mate Francisco Gento, the only six-times winner of the European Champions Cup, who died in January.
Amancio scored 155 goals in 471 competitive games for Madrid between 1962 and 1976. He joined the club from Deportivo de La Coruna, won the European Cup in the Ye-Ye team in 1966 and also won nine league titles and three Spanish cups.
He also scored 11 goals in 42 appearances for Spain with whom he won the 1964 European Championship after victory over the Soviet Union in Real Madrid’s own Estadio Bernabeu.
Later Amancio coached Madrid briefly and was a director during the first presidential tenure of Florentino Perez.
