COLOGNE: Switzerland began their Euro 2024 campaign in style with a 3-1 Group A victory over Hungary on goals from Kwadwo Duah, Michel Aebischer and Breel Embolo.

Striker Duah put the Swiss ahead in the 12th minute from Aebischer’s defence-splitting pass, a goal initially ruled offside but allowed after a VAR check.

This was Duah’s first goal for Switzerland and Aebischer opened his own international account on the stroke of halftime.

Hungary, who qualified impressively under Italian coach Marco Rossi, improved after the break and pulled one back with a diving header by Barnabas Varga to a left-wing cross from captain Dominik Szoboszlai.

Switzerland regained their two-goal advantage in stoppage time after substitute Embolo punished a weak defensive header with a lob over keeper Peter Gulacsi.

The Swiss now face Scotland also in Cologne on Wednesday while Hungary face hosts Germany in Stuttgart.
