KEIR RADNEDGE at WEMBLEY: England’ interim manager Lee Carsley insisted he was the man to blame for experimenting with his system in the 2-1 home defeat by Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored both Greek goals, at the start and and end of the second half, with England believing briefly that they had snatched a draw with a late equaliser from Jude Bellingham.

Carsley went with an attacking line-up and Bellingham as a false centre-forward but the team looked confused from start to finish.

He said: “We didn’t start great. We were second best a lot of times. We tried something different with the formation and never gave ourselves a chance to see whether it was the right decision or not. Seeing the result and the way it palmed out it was a challenging night for us. Greece played well, were highly motived and we were second best too much.

“I’m happy to take the blame. It was totally my idea and it was something that probably didn’t come off it but I don’t think we should ever rule out the opportunity to try something different.

“All the goals were poor, even our goal. The manner of conceding the two goals was disappointing, knowing the quality we’ve got.”

Carsley refused to speculate on his job prospects. He said: “I’m doing these three [Nations League] camps then hopefully I’ll be going back to the under-21s. I don’t rule myself in or out. I’m comfortable with my position where I am.”
