LONDON: Manchester United have got their man, having confirmed appointment of 39-year-old Portuguese Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. But they must wait 10 days for him to turn up at Old Trafford.
Amorim will swap Sporting Lisbon for United on November 11 and is then contracted to stay until at least June 2027. He is the sixth permanent manager for the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Every successor has withered under the pressure of expectation.
Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took charge on an interim basis after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday, will stay on for the club’s next three fixtures.
Sporting confirmed in a statement that United had agreed to pay €11m to trigger a release clause in Amorim’s contract. A United statement said: “Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.”
Amorim’s first fixture in charge of the Red Devils is set be on November 24, after the international break, in the Premier League away to promoted Ipswich. His first home game will be against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on November 28 ahead of a league match against Everton the following weekend.
Amorim will continue in command at at home to Estrela Amador in the league and then home again in the Champions League on Tuesday against Manchester City. His last game will be against a former club Braga in the league on November.
