NADINE ALSHEIKH HASSAN / AIPS: The retirement from competitive tennis of Rafael Nadal, after a phenomenal career spanning more than two decades, leaving behind a legacy forever to be etched in the history of the sport.

The 38-year-old Spaniard, known for his relentless determination, unparalleled work ethic and sportsmanship, was ranked world No1 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals for 209 weeks. He finished as the year-end No1 five times.

Nadal claimed 22 grand slam singles titles, including a record 14 French Open crowns, 92 ATP titles, and Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles. He also played a pivotal role in multiple Davis Cup victories for Spain.

In an emotional “last” press conference, Nadal: said: “I left a legacy. It’s not just about the titles or records. It’s about the passion, respect, and love for the game I’ve tried to share with every match I played.”

Throughout his career, Nadal overcame numerous injuries that might have ended the careers of lesser athletes. From gradual wear and tear injuries like his recurring ‘knee problems to a chronic foot condition, he defied the odds time and again, emerging stronger after every setback. This resilience earned him the nickname “El Toro” (The Bull) and inspired millions of fans worldwide.

“I’ve had my share of challenges, but every time I stepped onto the court, I gave my all,” Nadal said. “I hope people remember me as someone who never gave up.”

Beyond the court

Off the court, Nadal’s impact has been equally remarkable. Through the Rafa Nadal Academy and his foundation, he has nurtured young talent and supported underprivileged communities. His philanthropic work emphasises education, discipline, respect, and teamwork.

Nadal, in retirement, has hinted at remaining involved in tennis and continuing his charitable initiatives, saying: “This is not a goodbye to the sport, I’ll always find ways to contribute to the game that has given me so much. Tennis has been my life, but life is much bigger than tennis. Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey. The journey ends here, but the love for the game remains forever.”.

Tributes flooded in from across the tennis world and beyond. Roger Federer called Nadal “a fierce competitor and a dear friend,” while Novak Djokovic praised his “passion and integrity.”
