DOHA: Pachuca have become the first team to lift the FIFA Derby of the Americas trophy by defeating Botafogo 3-0 at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar.
The FIFA Derby of the Americas – introduced this year as part of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2024™ presented by Aramco – pits the winners of the CONMEBOL Libertadores and the Concacaf Champions Cup against one another.
Following a close first half, it was three second-half goals – courtesy of Oussama Idrissi, Nelson Deossa and Salomon Rondon – that proved to be the difference, as Guillermo Almada’s side ran out comfortable winners.
In addition to having captured the FIFA Derby of the Americas trophy, the Mexican side have earned the right to advance to the FIFA Challenger Cup, where they will come up against reigning CAF Champions League titleists Al Ahly FC.
The FIFA Challenger Cup winners will go on to face UEFA Champions League holders Real Madrid C. F. on 18 December – marking the two-year anniversary of the historic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ final – at the iconic Lusail Stadium, where the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2024 champions will be crowned.
This year’s edition of FIFA’s annual club competition began in September, when Al Ain FC beat Auckland City FC 6-2 in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Play-Off. Al Ahly then lifted the first silverware of the 2024 instalment when they overcame Al Ain 3-0 in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup at a packed Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.
