LONDON: Ruben Amorim has conceded that Manchester United’s priority is to avoid relegation rather than pursue European football for next season after the 2-0 defeat by Newcastle.

Amorim’s decision to use veterans Casemiro and Christian Eriksen as central midfieders backfired spectacularly in front of their own fans at Old Trafford, leaving them in 14th place and seven points above the relegation zone.

United’s new manager owned up to his own responsibility, saying: “Thus is also my fault. The team is not improving. It is a little bit lost in this moment and it is a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games. I think people are tired of excuses at this club. This club needs a shock.”
