Norris triumphs in Dutch Grand Prix in after Verstappen crashes out
AMSTERDAM: Lando Norris produced a masterclass performance to win a chaotic final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, overhauling championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli to claim his second consecutive victory.
The tone for a dramatic afternoon was set almost immediately on a damp surface. On the opening lap, home favorite Max Verstappen lost control at the banked final corner, slamming heavily into the outer barrier and scattering debris across the track.
The heavily damaged Red Bull brought out an immediate red flag, halting the race for roughly 40 minutes for barrier repairs. Fortunately, Verstappen walked away unhurt, though his early exit stunned the sea of Dutch fans in attendance.
When the action resumed, Antonelli made a lightning launch to snatch the lead away from pole-sitter Norris. The Mercedes prodigy controlled the middle stint of the race, building a gap while managing his strategy through multiple pit-stop phases. However, Norris stayed patient, extending his second stint to ensure a tyre offset for the final stint.
Equipped with fresher rubber, Norris steadily reeled in Antonelli. The critical moment arrived on lap 54, when Norris executed a brilliant around-the-outside overtake into Turn 1, pouncing just as Antonelli was negotiating traffic.
A late Virtual Safety Car—triggered by Esteban Ocon’s stranded Haas—threatened to shake up the order as Antonelli pitted for fresh soft tyres. Mercedes ordered George Russell to move aside for his quicker teammate, releasing Antonelli into second. However, Antonelli struggled to find the grip he needed and could not mount a serious challenge.
Norris pulled clear to cross the finish line over 11 seconds ahead of Antonelli, declaring the victory “gorgeous” over the radio as he closed the gap in the drivers’ championship. Russell held off a furious late charge from Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to secure the final spot on the podium. Liam Lawson finished seventh as the sole Red Bull driver to score points, while Nico Hülkenberg drove an exceptional race to take eighth for Audi.
