WARSAW: The National Stadium in Warsaw which is scheduled to host the Opening Match of Euro 2012 has yet to be cleared for action. The scheduled first domestic match was cancelled last weekend amid concerns over the state of readiness of the venue and now Rafal Kapler, head of the National Sport Centre overseeing its construction, has resigned.
Kapler will be replaced by his deputy Robert Wojtas, according to Sports Minister Joanna Mucha.
Kapler said earlier this week that his role “had come to an end”. He added: “As an executive I am convinced this magnificent object has the potential to become not only an entertainment and culture center but also a profitable undertaking.”
Kapler had headed up the National Sport Centre since 2008 but came in for criticism over repeated delays in construction. The Polish Super Cup, scheduled at the stadium last Saturday, was moved because of ongoing safety concerns.
