MADRID: Bayern Munich will face Chelsea in their own Allianz Arena in the Champions League Final next month after beating Real Madrid 2-1 on penalties in the Estadio Bernabeu after Jose Mourinho’s men had won ‘only’ 2-1 to square the aggregate at 3-3.
The shootout saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka both foiled by Manuel Neuer as Madrid went 2-0 down but then Iker Casillas saved from Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm to keep home hopes alive. Sergio Ramos blasted Madrid’s last kick high over the bar and Bastian Schweinsteiger stepped up to convert the decisive kick for Bayern.
UEFA president Michel Platini will not see his ‘dream’ final of Madrid against Barcelona. Madrid will blame the goal-line assistant – Platini’s controversial preference – for missing a penalty award in extra time when Neuer pulled back Esteban Granero by the shirt under the extra official’s nose.
