PRETORIA: South African football has been hit by another car crash tragedy, a month after the death of national team coaching assistant Thomas Madigage.
Four players with National First Division club Polokwane City [formerly Bay United] died and six others were injured when the club’s minibus overturned on the way back after a league match against FC AK.
PSL chairman Irvin Khoza said: “It’s a tragic loss for the South African football family. We extend our condolences to the players and management of the club. We also wish the injured players and officials a speedy recovery.”
Police spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said it was too early to name the players killed in the accident in Nobody outside Polokwane.
The minibus, which had a police escort, was in collision with another bus carrying members of church group on their way back to Zimbabwe.
Madigage died last month after a car accident in Limpopo. Last weekend South Africa beat Germany 2-1 in a veterans’ match played in his memory and raise funds for his family.
