NYON: Shakhtar Donetsk’s Brazilian forward Luiz Adriano has been suspended for one match for ‘violation of the principles of conduct’ during the UEFA Champions League game against FC Nordsjælland.
The suspension applies to next week’s UEFA Champions League group stage game between FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus in Ukraine. The Shakhtar player has also been required to perform one full day of community football service.
Luiz Adriano had been charged with violation of the principles of conduct (Article 5, UEFA Disciplinary Regulations) during last week’s UEFA Champions League Group E match against FC Nordsjælland in Copenhagen.
His ‘crime’ was running on to score a goal unopposed when all the players had stopped as Shakhtar sought to give the ball back to their opponents after an injury. Adriano, in apology, said that he had had his back to play and did not realise what had happened.
The decision will suit Juventus who need a draw away to Shakhtar next week to qualify for the second round of the Champions League at the expense of holders Chelsea.
