MILAN: Internazionale president Massimo Moratti has moved to play down talk of another scandal hitting the Italian game after the Milan giant was one of 41 clubs to be raided by the Guardia di Finanza.
The raids from the Italian financial police are part of an investigation into a host of allegedly illegal activities including tax evasion and money laundering.
The Guardia seized papers related to contracts between clubs, players and agents at Inter, Juventus, Napoli, Milan, Lazio and Roma among other clubs. Out of Serie A’s 20 clubs, only Bologna and Cagliari reportedly avoided the attention of the raids sanctioned by Naples prosecutors, who are looking into possible criminal conspiracy, international tax evasion, invoicing falsification and money laundering.
Moratti said: “It wasn’t a search. Just a request for documents. Far from being a search, it’s something they’re doing at 40 different clubs, and so it happened to us as well.”
Twelve player agents are also said to be part of the investigation, along with a number of foreign clubs whose identities were not disclosed.
