ZURICH: FIFA president Joseph S Blatter has sent a letter to the Football Association (FA) marking 25 years since the Hillsborough tragedy which claimed 96 lives.
Saturday, April 15, 1989, will forever be remembered as one of the blackest days in British sport.
Liverpool and Nottingham Forest lined-up in a much-anticipated FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough, home of Sheffield Wednesday, only for the day to end in tragedy, the scars of which are still being felt today.
“I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the 96 who so tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster,” Blatter said in his letter to the FA.
“It is above all important to honour and remember the innocent victims of 15 April 1989.”
In remembrance of the Hillsborough tragedy, flags at FIFA’s member associations will today be flown at half-mast.
