LONDON: Lionel Messi, Bas Dost and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished one-two-three in the annual Golden Shoe competition to recognise European league football’s leading marksman.

Barcelona’s Messi has thus secured his fourth Golden Shoe in seven years.

The 29-year-old Argentinian scored 37 goals in the Spanish league, three clear of Bas Dost of Sporting Clube and six ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the long-time leader through the first half of the season.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane was the highest-placed Premier League striker, finishing fifth overall after his remarkable feat of seven goals in four days in Spurs’ last two games of the Premier League campaign.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.

The first ranking of the new season will appear in the second week of December, incorporating certain some changes in the balance between countries.
