MADRID: A Spanish judge has rejected a plea from former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell to be released on bail while he awaits further action over money-laundering allegations.
Rosell, has been detained for allegedly laundering €15m through the sale of image rights for 24 friendly matches of the Brazilian national team,
The prosecution, in opposing the application for bail, referred to the existence of recorded conversations between the former presidents of Barcelona and the Brazilian confederation – Ricardo Teixeira – in which they discussed ways and places through which they could avoid justice.
It was suggested Rosell might flee the country.
Rosell was imprisoned, without bail, by the judge of the National Court, Carmen Lamela, accusing him of being part of a criminal organisation which was defrauding money through companies established in tax havens.
The wire taps suggested Teixeira had asked Rosell to suggest tax havens where the Brazilian former FIFA executive committee member might be safe from extradition to the United States where he has been indicted in the FIFAGate corruption case.
