LONDON: Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has maintained his lead in the ESM Golden Shoe, the prize for leading league marksman in European football.
He added a goal to his tally in the French league in PSG’s 3-1 home win over Caen before the holiday break.
The Uruguayan has benefited from a change in the computation because France is now among the top five nations according to UEFA’s July rankings. This means his goals benefit from a multiple of 2.0 rather than the 1.5 of last season.
Portugal slipped out of the top five meaning the value of goals in the local league for players from Benfica, Sporting and Porto etc has been downgraded to 1.5. Goals in the countries ranked on down from 23 stand at face value.
As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
