KIEV: Vitaly Klitschko, mayor of Kiev, ordered a stepping-up of local security around the Champions League Final after local hooligans attacked Liverpool fans in a bar in the city centre writes KEIR RADNEDGE.
Around 20 masked men attacked the fans in the Rooter restaurant near the Olympic stadium where Liverpool face holders Real Madrid, overturning tables and chairs. Several fans were treated for cuts to the head and neck from flying glass.
Klitschko said: “The issue of security in Kiev is our priority so there will be more than 10,000 policemen, stewards and security services on the streets. We studied thoroughly what happened in France during the European Championship in 2016 [when Russian hoologans attacked England fans in Marseille] and in no circumstances will we allow a repeat of this.
“There was one unpleasant incident organised by people who considered themselves fans but who, unfortunately, included Ukrainian citizens, but I can say with certainty that all those responsible have been are detained and will be punished and security measures will be strengthened.”
