MOSCOW: Eight people, including a number of foreign football fans in town for the World Cup, were hurt after a taxi ploughed into them near Red Square in central Moscow.
Russia’s state-run Interfax news agency said the driver was believed to have been drunk at the time and had fallen asleep at the wheel. He tried to run off after the crash but was detained by onlookers and held for the police.
The accident took place on Ilinka Street, about 650 feet from Red Square and Moscow’s famous GUM shopping arcade.
Some of the injured were reported to be fans from Mexico who are about to face World Cup holders Germany.
