MADRID: Julen Lopetegui, appointed amid World Cup controversy in the summer, has the poorest record of any new Real Madrid coach under the presidency of Florentino Perez after Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat by CSKA in Moscow.

After 10 games, the new coach of the world and European champions has only won five with three defeats and two draws.

Saturday’s LaLiga visit to Alaves could be crucial.

His start is even worse than that of Rafa Benítez who lasted only half a season and started with seven wins and three draws in his first 10  matches. At least he did not lose any of those games.

Madrid fans must look back to 1998-99 season to find a coach who started as badly. That was John Toshack after his midseason arrival.

The Welshman also accomplished an ever the worse start to a season before Lopetegi. In the 1999-2000 campaign – in which he was fired – his first 10 matches produced four wins, five draws and one defeat.
