GENEVA: The organisation representing European league football has come out firmly against the idea of a super league, as has been discussed by leading clubs.

A statement from the European Professional Leagues Association – which has  seat on the executive committee of UEFA – expressed “firm opposition to the creation of any type of closed Super League ” and its support for continental governing body in its control of club competitions.

EPFL was reacting “to the rumours and speculation about the possible creation of a European Super League with the big professional clubs” as revealed by the Football Leaks documentation.

It added: “The leagues support the European sports model based on a pyramid structure, where the mechanisms of promotion and descent and the sporting merits of the clubs are the basis of the competition.”

This was the only effective means to protect and improve the competitive balance in European football.
