ROME: Champions League holders Real Madrid set aside their inconsistent domestic form to win 2-0 away to Roma and reach the knockout stage with a game to spare in Group G.

Coach Santiago Solari was happy to move on as his side bounced back from a shock weekend Liga loss at Eibar with the help of goals from Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez.

Both qualified while CSKA Moscow lost 2-1 after suffering a late collapse at home to Viktoria Plzen.

However Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was handed another reminder in a 2-2 draw at Lyon in Group F of that they still have some way to go if they are to win the Champions League for the first time.

In Group H  Juventus went through too as a brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo assist for Mario Mandzukic set up a 1-0 win over Valencia.

The Serie A champions had struggled to break down Valencia’s defence until Joao Cancelo slipped the ball to Ronaldo in the Valencia area in the 59th minute. Ronaldo wrong-footed Gabriel Paulista and rolled a low cross across the face of goal for Mandzukic to turn in.

Manchester United went through with them after Marouane Fellaini struck a controversial stoppage-time winner to provide a laboured 1-0 win over Young Boys.

After the match David de Gea was hailed as the best keeper in the world by manager Jose Mourinho after a superb save helped them move on.

Ajax Amsterdam reached the knockout stages for the first time since 2006 after a Dusan Tadic brace gave the Dutch side a 2-0 win over 10-man AEK Athens in Greece. Bayern Munich also progressed in beating Benfica 5-1.
