LONDON: Les Reed has been appointed as England’s new technical director by the Football Association in succession to Dan Ashworth.
The former head of football development at Southampton will be responsible for all elite England men’s sides from development squads to seniors.
Reed takes up the role in February after Ashworth departs for a similar role at Premier League Brighton.
The 66-tear-old has worked previously at the FA on England manager Kevin Keegan’s coaching team in 1998 and was with the governing body until 2004.
Reed, who left Saints last month after eight years, was preferred from a three-man shortlist also comprising Mark Warburton — the former Brentford, Rangers and Nottingham Forest manager — and Matt Crocker, currently FA head of development team coaching.
Early speculation had also concerned QPR’s Les Ferdinand and Wolves’ Kevin Thelwell.
